A new generation of exclusive dating sites is vetting potential users based on their education and careers, their net worth and even their tax records.
Exclusive Dating Sites For Professionals
It used to be that if you wanted to meet someone of a certain caliber, you ventured to a certain bar. There would be a line out the door with a stern doorman, and inside would be a group of beautiful people, all considered special because they had made it over the velvet rope. Now there’s an app for that.

Forget Tinder. Forget OkCupid. Who has time for all that mopping? Instead, young professionals looking for a match are flocking to apps like The League and syncing their LinkedIn profiles in the hopes that their resumes will help seal the deal and find someone special for them.
“The League brand is really for those ambitious, motivated young professionals who want to spend time with other ambitious, motivated young professionals,” said Amanda Bradford, founder of The League. And you have to work hard to get into La Liga: there is a waiting list of 100,000 people.
“Our requirements for women are just as strict as the requirements for men. Men know that the women they meet in La Liga are career-oriented, smart, ambitious and work just as hard. “That’s the kind of spirit we want to instill in our community.”
La Liga has been described as a Tinder for elites. To join, potential users are screened and selected based on their education and work history. Not everyone gets in: only the best receive the email informing them that they have been “recruited to La Liga”.

Once part of the league, its members will receive five new games every day at 5:00 p.m. m., the so-called “happy hour”.
According to Rick Nguyen, a 28-year-old entrepreneur and co-founder of Spot Trender, linking online dating apps to LinkedIn was “a stroke of genius.”
“Many dating sites try to distance your professional life and your love life as if they were two separate things. But to fully understand someone, I think you need both sides, because as much as we try to say it’s not our job, part of us is our job,” he told The Guardian.
Bradford became interested in online dating after becoming single following the end of a five-year relationship. He began his online search while completing his master’s degree in business administration at Stanford University and found that he kept running into the same problem. You had no control over who could see your profile, including potential business contacts, bosses, and colleagues. She also felt like she had no idea who the people she was paired with were. There was no context to their profiles, just their name and photo. She wanted more.

“I felt like I should go ahead and create an app that I could use myself and solve all the vulnerabilities that I had identified with the other apps,” she said. And so La Liga was born.
It launched in San Francisco in November 2014, has since expanded to New York and is expected to launch in Los Angeles and London in the coming months.
What’s special about The League, according to Bradford, is that it syncs with LinkedIn and Facebook. This allows the app to ensure that your profile is not visible to your professional contacts, while also giving potential matches a better idea of who you are as a person based on your education and work experience.
If you’re not a Goldman banker or tech entrepreneur, don’t worry. Bradford expects the dating pool to represent many different industries. “We don’t want everyone to belong to the same type of school. “We don’t want everyone to have an MBA or a doctor,” he told The Guardian.

According to Bradford, the recipe for entry into La Liga is not “obvious”. The main thing is that you need to bring something special to the table.
“Assuming you didn’t go to university, or you went to a university that isn’t known as a top-notch institution, that’s fine. But we hope he has achieved something in his professional career to make up for it. Maybe you didn’t go to Oxford but founded a nonprofit to help underprivileged children in Africa and you’re running that business from the ground up. To me, that’s just as impressive, if not more impressive, than someone who went to a top university.”
That doesn’t mean La Liga isn’t exclusive. In New York, the acceptance rate is around 20%. In San Francisco, about 25%. Each community is limited to about 10,000. “We don’t plan to increase that number until we have the product,” Bradford said.
Krista White, 23, lives in Silicon Valley, California and works in public relations. He studied theater at Columbia University. He has been on the league’s waiting list since February.

“At the moment I’m number 8,000 out of 100,000,” he told the Guardian. “It shouldn’t be for me. I don’t know.”
Unlike White, Nguyen only spent “a few days” on the waiting list before being drafted into La Liga. “I didn’t wait that long. Thank God,” he said with a laugh. He also lives in Silicon Valley.
25-year-old Daniel Ratcliffe didn’t have to wait long to get into La Liga either. “When you register for the first time, you are put on a waiting list. I was like number 11,000 and thought, ‘Oh, I guess that’s not going to happen,'” said Ratcliffe, who lives in New York’s East Village and works in digital media and entertainment. “Then a few days later I received an email saying I had been approved and I have been there ever since. I’m not sure what criteria they use to accept members.”
Ratcliffe said he wondered if he would get in; After all, he didn’t attend an Ivy League university. He attended New York University to obtain his master’s degree. He also likes that his dating profile on The League looks more professional and he can connect with other professionals his age.
How Do Gottman Principles Apply To The Dating World?
“I am a hard worker. I worked hard. I have my master’s degree,” he notes. He adds that he has never heard of people “catfishing” on LinkedIn and creating a fake online profile to trick people into romantic relationships. “I think because you have to be waitlisted, everyone takes dating and messaging more seriously.”
Nguyen, who said his response rate on other apps is between 20% and 30%, said: “On The League, I’ve had close to a 100% response rate on my games.”

The league also has a number of filters that allow members to select their ideal date’s education level, height, age and ethnicity.

“We really believe that people know what they want and we allow them to be discerning and have high standards,” Bradford told The Guardian. “We allow users to set ethnic preferences. We don’t see many users doing this; probably about 10% have strong ethnicity preferences.”
According to her, members are initially shown matches that match their preferences, “but once they run out of matches, we show them all.” “It’s just a matter of prioritization.”
“I find this absurd and ridiculous, but as a black woman in the dating pool, it would be nice to know that someone I was matched with didn’t like black girls,” White said. “It’s really problematic, but I would like to know if anyone doesn’t like me for that reason, because that’s definitely not someone I want to talk to. “It would be a waste of time for both of us if it was racist.”
Would you still join La Liga if you were “drafted” now? “I don’t know it. I have a somewhat cynical view of online dating. I mean, I would try it and see what happens,” said White, who has tried other apps like Tinder. “I always have a little bit. I hope that this is the day of happiness and that this game will be perfect.”
