Drawing a fashionable figure doesn’t have to be difficult. In this tutorial you will learn step by step an easy method to create a professional feminine crochet pattern!

A croquis is a drawing of a model that you use to design an outfit. It can also be called a fashion figure or role model.

Fashionable crocodiles come in various shapes, sizes and styles. It all depends on the end use of your design and the demographic you are designing for. I have used a variety of Crocs throughout my career. Some were more stylized, others very simple.

Fashion Sketchbooks Are Everything

(P.S. If you want to avoid the stress of making your own croquis and start designing right away, check out this Croquis Set with 9 Women’s Heads that I made.)

The image above illustrates the difference between a realistic body (left) and a fashion sketch with 9 head proportions (right)

I will show you how to draw crocodiles “9 heads”. Crocis is 9 heads high from the top of the head to the ankles, which is much more elongated than the average female. (Feet are not taken into account because their height may vary depending on the type of shoe and heel height.)

The 9-head model exaggerates the model’s proportions to display clothes in an elongated and dramatic scale.

However, models can and should have different body proportions, so I encourage you to develop your crocodile to any shape and size.

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a crocodile with 9 heads (in the proportions taught in fashion colleges), but you can later adjust the proportions to best suit your target demographic.

The height and width of the head serve as an indicator of the dimensions of the rest of the body.

In this image you can see how the body is divided into 9 equal parts from the top of the head to the ankle. Feet are not included as they may vary in height depending on shoe type and heel height.

It is helpful to use the head as a measuring point rather than the actual measurement as paper size may vary. From a small piece of paper to a billboard, you can outline the size and proportions of your figure by first drawing 9 heads.

If you are working with 8.5 x 11 paper, each head may be approximately 1 inch tall, but this measurement will vary depending on the size of the paper.

Before we get started, you’ll need paper, a pencil, and a ruler (or any straight line). A break would be helpful, but not necessary. Draw lightly with a pencil so that it can be easily erased.

Step 1: Draw 9 heads of approximately the same shape and size and label the numbers 1-9 (leave some space at the bottom of the page for the feet).

Once we have established the skeleton of the crocus, we can add the structure and shape of the muscles. Take your time and draw lightly so you can erase easily.

Step 4: Add the neck shape and outline the shoulder, using the ovals as guidelines. Repeat on the other side

Step 5: Outline the leg and foot as shown, using the ovals as guidelines. Repeat on the other side

Step 7: Add a center line on both sides of the body as shown. This is called the “princess line”.

Step 8: Edit the steps as needed, adjusting the proportions as needed. Then follow the steps below to complete your sketch.

Fashion Designer Job Description

A fashion figure differs from a simple figure drawing in that it is a more dramatic, less detailed depiction, involving more exaggerated movements and proportions. Mods can basically take any stylistic form, allowing you to really express your artistic style. Often the style of fashion sketches will reflect the style of the clothing being designed. As a beginner, don’t worry too much about finding your style right away – it’s something that happens naturally over time, whether you want it to or not. For now, focus on learning the basic proportions and movement concepts outlined below, which should hopefully outline the arena blocks that will help you find your drawing style over time.
